MARCO DI LAURO
BIOGRAPHY
In every single story he shoots, big or small, in Italy or anywhere in the world, Marco Di Lauro always tries to capture the sacred side of life and its deeper meaning.
Marco Di Lauro was born in Milan in 1970 and has lived in Rome since 2000. He took his first photograph at the age of 14, during a holiday in Egypt. His mother taught him how to use the Olympus OM10 and how to frame his first landscapes.
His attraction to beauty as the truest expression of every form of life (and its reason for being) led him to dream of a future as an art critic and to study Italian literature and art history at Milan State University and in the United States, where he enrolled in a journalism course at Boston University in Massachusetts. In 1995 he returned to Italy and graduated in photography at the European Institute of Design in Milan.
The decision to be present on the scene of the most explosive armed conflicts of the 21st century came gradually. Between 1990 and 1994, Marco Di Lauro preferred to use his Nikon to shoot the social issue of abused and abandoned children in India or the poverty of the inhabitants of the Andes mountains in Peru. At the same time he covered fashion shows in Milan and Paris as assistant photographer and worked as assistant-editor at Magnum Photos di Parigi.
In July 1998 he paid his own way to Kosovo, where he was one of the few photojournalists present when ethnic cleansing began a few months after his arrival. His photos from the front, selected daily from among thousands and printed every night in a makeshift darkroom, win the approval of theAssociated Press (AP).

After Kosovo, Di Lauro became a member of the PA staff and covered the 2000 Jubilee of the Catholic Church from Rome. He moved to the city, serving as photo editor for the Rome office.
In July 2001 he covered the G8 in Genoa and in October of the same year, two weeks after the attack on the Twin Towers in Manhattan, he decided to set off alone for Afghanistan, entering the country on foot from the north, overcoming mountains reaching five thousand metres in altitude.
For the second time in three years, he found himself in the right place at the right time: he was one of the first Westerners to cover the fall of Kabul from the inside, under fire from Northern Alliance troops, who conquered the city on 13 November 2001. That same day, a Taliban guerrilla shoots Di Lauro in the back during an ambush.
In September 2002, Marco Di Lauro began working under an exclusive contract for Getty Images News Service, covering the Middle East conflict in the Gaza Strip, and then spent most of 2003 and 2004 in Iraq, documenting the American invasion and the plight of the Iraqi people.
In addition to war reportages, Marco Di Lauro is also present at more traditional, but no less hard-fought clashes, such as the Palio di Siena and the battle of the oranges that takes place every year in the city of Ivrea, Italy, during Carnival time. He also covers religious events, such as the Easter processions in Sicily, the Serpentari procession in the city of Cocullo, the Easter processions in Seville or religious life in Italy and the Vatican City.
In every story he shoots, large or small, in Italy, Peru, India, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Gaza, Egypt, Kenya, Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Lebanon, Uganda, Chad, Sudan, Jordan, Bosnia, Spain and the West Bank, Marco Di Lauro always tries to capture the sacred side of life and its deeper meaning
